If you've been researching celebrant training recently, you'll probably have noticed something. There are many excellent training providers, each with their own approach, philosophy and community. That's a good thing. Diversity within our profession allows prospective celebrants to find a learning environment that genuinely suits them.
Occasionally, however, comparisons between providers can become less about celebrating strengths and more about criticising differences. Recently, I came across a comment suggesting that unless a training provider is VAT registered, they're simply "playing" at being a training school and that it's little more than a hobby.
It made me pause.
Not because I felt offended, but because it raises an important question for anyone considering celebrant training - "How do you actually choose the right training provider?"
There Is No Single "Best" Training School
Just as there is no single way to be a brilliant celebrant, there is no single model for delivering exceptional training. Some celebrants are naturally quiet and reflective. Others are energetic, humorous and theatrical. Some specialise in weddings, others in funerals, family ceremonies, naming ceremonies or bespoke celebrations.
What makes them successful isn't that they all work the same way. It's that they've found a style that is authentic to them.
The same is true of training providers.
Each has its own teaching style, values, experience, structure and level of ongoing support. Some teach large cohorts. Some deliberately keep numbers small. Some focus primarily on initial training. Others invest heavily in continuing professional development and long-term support.
None of these approaches is automatically right or wrong.
The important question isn't, "Which provider is the biggest?" or "Which provider charges VAT?"

Choosing a training provider is a significant investment, not just financially, but emotionally and professionally.
Before making your decision, consider asking questions such as:
• Who will be teaching me?
• Are they experienced, practising celebrants?
• How much practical experience will I gain?
• Will I receive constructive feedback and individual support?
• Is the learning style right for me, online, in person or blended?
• What happens once I've completed the course?
• Are there ongoing mentoring, networking and professional development?
• Does the provider actively support graduates in building successful businesses?
• What do former students say about their experience?
• Do the provider's values genuinely resonate with me?
The answers to these questions will tell you far more about the quality of a training provider than whether they're registered for VAT.
Professionalism Isn't Measured by a VAT Number
VAT registration is a financial and tax matter. Businesses register because they exceed the VAT threshold or because they choose to register voluntarily.
It is not a measure of professionalism.
It doesn't tell you how experienced the tutors are.
It doesn't tell you how well students are supported.
It doesn't tell you whether graduates feel confident standing in front of families.
It certainly doesn't tell you whether a provider genuinely cares about the people they train.
Professionalism is reflected in experience.
Integrity.
Knowledge.
Ethical practice.
High standards.
Authenticity.

Bigger Doesn't Always Mean Better
Some people thrive in large learning environments with extensive cohorts. Others flourish in smaller groups where tutors know them personally and support continues long after the course has finished. Neither model is superior. They're simply different.
