Gary Lockyer’s Journey Into Pagan Ceremony

When you think of a traditional wedding, you might picture a white gown, a walk down the aisle, and perhaps a few heartfelt vows. But for Gary Lockyer and the couple he’s working with, tradition takes on an entirely different, yet deeply spiritual, form. Set for May 2025, this Wiccan/Viking-themed wedding promises to be a magical fusion of pagan spirituality, Norse symbolism, and personal storytelling.

Viking Wedding Planning and Initial Thoughts

In a recent chat within the Celebrant Circle, Gary M Lockyer shared his excitement (and a few nerves) about the ceremony. The couple recently sent him some feedback, requesting minor tweaks to the love story section of the script, a moment that all celebrants know comes with a mix of curiosity and concern: is it a light edit or a total rewrite? Luckily, this time, it’s just a light touch-up.

Gary also opened up about his interest in paganism and how it overlaps with Viking spiritual traditions. This deeper connection has fuelled his dedication to creating a ceremony that looks authentic and feels spiritually grounded and meaningful for the couplewisdom and faith might include irises.

Research and Ceremony Structure

With only basic background information from the couple, Gary dove deep into Norse and Pagan traditions to craft a unique experience. The ceremony will loosely follow the Celebrant Circle Ceremony Circle layout, symbolic of eternity and unity, and will include a blessing, handfasting, and ring exchange.

Set on a small island, the location couldn’t be more picturesque. Guests will watch from across the water as the couple, led by the Groom’s flower girl daughter, crosses a bridge to the island. Standing barefoot beneath a tree canopy, with a ceremonial sword, the scene sounds like it’s straight out of an ancient saga.

Ceremony Details and Guest Involvement

The ceremony begins with a heartfelt welcome and a setting of the scene, immersing guests in a spiritual atmosphere. The couple's love story is then shared, leading into a personalised blessing, custom vows, the symbolic ring exchange, and the binding ritual of hand fasting.

Gary will be miked up and positioned to the side, ensuring his presence doesn’t distract from the intimate moment. The experience has been carefully curated to feel both sacred and accessible to the 60 guests, including 12 children.

Guest Expectations and Attire

One interesting detail? While the groom will be fully decked out in Viking attire and the bride in a traditional white Wicca-inspired dress, guests aren’t expected to follow suit. Gary himself will wear an outfit of a white shirt and a black waistcoat, mirroring the balance and duality of the couple’s journey.

Although the Groom’s daughter will play a key role as the flower girl, the couple decided not to involve her in the handfasting due to her age, a thoughtful decision that shows a blend of tradition and modern sensibility.

Symbolism and Spiritual Touches

The rings may feature runes, and grounding elements like salt and earth will be included to honour Pagan customs. While the ceremony will be photographed, the couple has opted against videography to preserve the spiritual intimacy of the moment.

The couple discovered Gary, an accredited and professionally trained celebrant, at a Wedding fair - an encounter that blossomed into this incredible collaboration. His commitment to capturing the essence of Viking and Wiccan spirituality has made all the difference.

Plan B and Final Preparations

Of course, no outdoor event is complete without a contingency plan. A beautifully converted barn stands ready as the backup venue should the weather turn. Gary has already walked through the space and feels confident that the magic will translate, rain or shine.

In keeping with tradition, the couple has chosen not to share their vows in advance - a decision that promises an emotional, spontaneous moment during the ceremony.

Promotion and Looking Ahead

This Viking wedding could be the start of something much bigger for Gary’s celebrant journey.

As the ceremony date approaches, one thing is clear: this isn’t just a wedding. It’s a sacred rite, a theatrical experience, and a testament to the couple’s love and shared spirituality.

And for Gary, it’s a calling—one he’s ready to answer with sword in hand (well, metaphorically speaking).
