Some of the most beautiful wedding rituals are those which go beyond uniting the to-be-weds and build connection with their loved ones, too. A flower ceremony is a gentle way of incorporating your nearest and dearest – or even all of your guests – into your wedding ceremony, and building a bouquet or table decoration for your reception, in the process.
Ask your celebrant to help you to plan a flower ceremony into your wedding, and in addition to nurturing a feeling of family and togetherness, you’ll also be providing your photographer and/or videographer with an opportunity for some stunning photo memories of you interacting with your loved ones.
How does a flower ceremony work?

Step One:
Choose meaningful flowers which fit with the theme of your wedding, or symbolise some of your core values.
For example:
A winter wedding might include seasonal flowers, like snowdrops, hellebores or heather.
A spring wedding might include freesias, hyacinths or primroses.
Elopements might include cleomes.
Those seeking good fortune might include peonies .
Those who champion wisdom and faith might include irises.
Each month also has symbolic flowers, so you could choose stems which represent the birth months of the to-be-weds, the month of the wedding, or the month that the to-be-weds met – or even use a mixture.
However, it is important to add that the most meaningful flowers are the ones that you find the most beautiful… so if your favourite flowers symbolise something that doesn’t necessarily reflect the vibe of your wedding, disregard the meaning and include your favourites!

Step Two:
Before the ceremony begins, task a loved one with handing out your chosen stems (usually one per person) – you could choose to do this with only your closest family and friends, or hand out a stem to every guest. If you’re doing the latter, make sure you have built enough time into your wedding for this, as the flower ceremony will take a little bit longer than usual… and you may end up with a very large bouquet.

Step Three:
During your ceremony, at the time which you have planned with your celebrant, each person will bring their stem to you, present it, and make a little wish for your happiness as they hand it over. This process repeats until the to-be-weds have received all of the stems, and had a lovely interaction with everyone taking part.

Step Four:
The bunch of flowers can then either be tied together with a ribbon, creating a very special bouquet, or they can be placed in a vase and put on display for the rest of the ceremony and at the reception, for everyone to see.
If you love your flowers so much, you will want to keep them forever…
You can dry your flowers by using a professional service, or by hanging them upside down in a dark, dry and well-ventilated space for a few weeks.
You could choose to use pre-dried stems in your arrangement, so that your flowers are already dried and ready to display in your home, straight after the wedding.
You could opt to press the flowers and have them framed instead of keeping them as a bunch, creating a unique piece of artwork for your wall.
You could ask your wedding photographer to get some amazing shots of the flowers and frame the photos in your home.
Your flower ceremony shopping list:

Enough stems for the people involved in the ceremony
Ribbon or string to tie the bouquet or a vase or interesting container to display the flowers in.
I can’t wait to see how you make the flower ceremony your own!
